The New Mt Zion

Mt. Zion is a very popular name for churches. It just so happens that Joel's "home church," and the same one that his mom works at is Mt. Zion Baptist.

It's also the name of a new church that we were invited to. Mt. Zion Methodist in Cornelius, NC.

One of Joel's old high school classmates and childhood neighbors moved down to Charlotte because her husband got a job with the same company as Joel, (what a coincidence!) Anyway Joel had come in contact with her via Facebook and had found out she was a stay-at-home mom too and thought it would be good for us to get to know each other. To make a long story short I ended up inviting her to join the mommy group that I co-organize and then she referred us to her families church.

We weren't sure what to expect but decided to try the contemporary service as we were used to the laid back non-traditional services more and it seemed to suit our needs at other churches too. We met Norm, Jessica and their cute baby Henry in the parking lot and went in to get our seats. We were instantly greeted by a member of the church and saw plenty of kids and little ones.

My biggest worry for finding a church since we've had Avery is that I do NOT want to leave her in a nursery where she and I don't know any of the people working there. I'd rather get to know the church and the members and feel comfortable with her there. Especially since she has yet to have a babysitter, even the grandparents have not watched her yet. Anyway, that's another topic in itself.

So we felt very comfortable with the people. The sermon was a good one as well, although I was a tad distracted by my little one, but she honestly was such a good baby the whole service. It was Communion Sunday, so Joel and the Gill's partook. I chose not to, for some reason I just feel weird taking communion at a church that isn't "mine."

After service was over Joel and I discussed what each of us thought about the church. I thought maybe Joel would be a little turned off by the lack of diversity (all I saw was white people,) and also he loved the music at the last church we attended because it was a real rock band. But he surprised me and said he really enjoyed it and wanted to go again. I'm still testing the waters to see if this will be my "home" church. I liked it but just didn't feel at home quite yet, so I want to attend a few more times and pray a ton and see where God points us.

I really can't wait to find a church though because I want to make that connection and have that church family. Plus, I would really love to have Avery dedicated, that means a lot to us but I didn't want to just do it at any church.

Anyway, please pray for our church search, and we'll keep you updated.

I'll be praying for you, too - I know it's hard to find a "home" church. One bit of advice someone once told me is to try a church out for 3-weeks, at least. The reason being, is that sometimes they may have a "sub" Pastor for whatver reason, etc. AND also, that way you will get to know a few people & can really get a feel for how the church "works."
Keep us posted!
